Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Brett H — 22 Jul 2017
Disjointed and at times a mess, Nolan fixates on storylines that fail to tell the whole story of Dunkirk. One has no sense of the big picture, the commanders, the British and French public, the brutal and heroic defense by the French and British troops whose actions saved the many, though they were left behind to try and survive 5 years as POWs.
And his laughable depiction of an armada of small boats arriving somehow all at one moment complete with swelling strings and cheers undercuts the solemnity of everything he has attempted to portray. Nolan is too in love with his own style of time-travel filmmaking to do justice to this epic historical tragedy and triumph.
Drowning men do not make a movie.
