Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Harry W — 18 Jul 2017
A very unconventional way of story telling risks putting character development aside in favor for a very engaging and claustrophobic narrative. And it works.
This movie tells 3 seemingly separate stories of characters and their experiences at Dunkirk, flashing back and forth between each narrative keeps a steady pace on what could have been a dreadful durge at the hands of a less talented director. Each actor does a fine job. There's not a lot of dialogue. It's a story of experience and encounter, not comradery and friendship.
Dunkirk is a fresh breath of air into The war genre, almost becoming a thriller at points. You'll certainly find yourself biting your nails as your butt threatens to leave the seat.
Overall, my only problem would be that this unique way of storytelling does sacrifice character development and limits just how much you can care about them. Not to say the film doesnt do a damn good job of breathing life into these characters, but the narrative does sidestep it in order to get a bigger picture.
