Review of Dunkirk (2017) by Jason V — 16 Jan 2018
I started shifting in my seat not 20 minutes into Okja, because I was completely bored and already dreading having to watch the rest. I shifted in my seat for most of Dunkirk because I was constantly interested or worried or thrilled.
Some people say they didn't connect to any of the characters, and I can only ask: You didn't feel anything for George, or Peter, or Mr. Dawson, or Commander Bolton when he looked up and saw all the many puny-looking boats coming to help? Either way, I don't know if it matters.
Because you were there. YOU were a soldier on the beach, in the sinking ships, in the plane running out of fuel. YOU were a civilian on a small boat heading into war. This movie helps you connect to how YOU might feel in those situations.
I think that kind of immersion is maybe the thing Dunkirk does best. Not claiming it's a perfect movie, but it's definitely an experience. NOTE: If you're extra sensitive to fears of getting shot at while almost drowning and/or possibly catching on fire, maybe stay home.
