The Good: action scenes are very well dune with the exception of the ridiculous shields which make combat feel like something out of a children's videogame instead of something visceral and deadly The Bad: the style is very bland to say the least.

shooting this film in black and white would not significantly change the way it looks. costume design is all over the place; a mishmash of WoW, Daft Punk cosplay, and Victorian. many pointless liberties were taken with the source material.

one such example is the stained lips of the mentats which has been reduced to a tiny strip of black on the lower lip. The Ugly: Like the Hobbit films this series is being stretched out as much as possible which is hilarious given the many books in the Dune franchise.

Dune is a slow burn, the scriptwriters unfathomably slowed the pace. Changes made for pacing are easily justifiable when transforming a book into film but the changes in this film make zero sense. The writers deleted material from the book and extended scenes that could easily have been shortened.

In light of the fact that two films are being made to tell one book it's hardly necessary for the scriptwriters to completely eliminate any material from the book. So many poor decisions were made by the producers of this movie.

In retrospect this really isn't surprising considering the fact that the director and scripters belittled the source material in seemingly every interview they gave.
