Review of Dune (2021) by Bloodtherover — 22 Oct 2021
It’s very difficult to hold any critique towards this film that can’t generally be made about any adaptation of such a beloved book. However even in condensing Dune into a two part film, Denis Villeneuve has packed in an immense amount of detail that will finally satisfy longtime fans of the series.
Pretty much casting was near perfect. The weapons, costumes, vehicles, and architecture are in a class of their own, truly presenting a partially familiar, partially alien, and wholly immersive vision of the 102nd Century AG.
The sound design and cinematography are also top notch, to the point where I really do recommend you see it for the first time in a theatre. Dune 2021 absolutely deserves the comparisons to the Lord of the Rings films in that it brings an exalted work of fiction to life in a way that will amaze newcomers to the series as much as longtime fans.
Truly Denis has done something amazing here, and I hope immensely that he gets to realize his vision in adapting Frank Herbert’s work at least through Dune Messiah. This really is about as good as science fiction can get.
