Review of Dune (2021) by Hinglemccringle — 24 Oct 2021
Most of the weight and tension from character interactions in the book were lost in the film with Yueh received the worst of it, many of the action portions felt dragged on while too many of the actor driven moments felt rushed, and the spot they chose to end it on felt unsatisfactory to me. By it's nature it's an incomplete story but it really feels like there's something missing to make a satisfying standalone experience.
That being said, it's another gorgeous film by Villeneuve. The cinematography and locations are great, the art direction & costume designs are top notch, and the soundtrack is one of Hans Zimmer's best works. It's probably the closest someone can get to a faithful adaptation of the first chunk of the book without being 4 hours long, which I would definitely watch multiple times.
