Review of Dumbo (1941) by Garrett C — 17 Apr 2012
When speaking of Dumbo, people tend to talk about its emotional impact. This is a great aspect of the film and something that should be pointed out. Although people often forget that this film has amazing animation, humor, and characters.
It is unabashedly cartoon-like compared to Bambi or Fantasia. This is not a negative, being a very long cartoon short is nothing to be ashamed of if it's done well. Dumbo also stands the test of time better than the other 4 films of the Disney golden age.
It has incredible music with witty lyrics and has many memorable scenes. Such as "Baby Mine", or the scene where the big top is being constructed, and of course Pink Elephants on Parade. Disney's Dali-esque surrealistic short.
I now noticed it's humongous influence on the Heffalumps and Woozles scene in Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day. The characterizations are well done as always when Walt Disney was at the helm. The lighting and design is extremely beautiful at times such as Casey Jr.
on the tracks at night. Many animation experts and historians consider Dumbo to be one of the few perfect movies ever made, and I wholeheartedly agree.
