Review of Dumbo (1941) by Todd A — 31 May 2011
Dumbo is one other classic example of a first for Disney. Dumbo is one of the few Disney films that is, in fact, an original story. Dumbo is just a young elephant ridiculed by the other elephants but thatâ(TM)s only half of the story.
His mother is claimed to be a mad elephant for defending her son at a circus performance. Along the way he befriends Timothy Mouse (the irony being the myth that they canâ(TM)t stand each other in the animal kingdom) and they go on quite the adventure to get Dumbo love and respect from every one.
Itâ(TM)s quite a touching tale that is pretty hard to describe, yet perfect in every way. This film was a big financial success after the failures of Pinocchio and Fantasia and is the shortest of all the Disney Animation Canon films running at only 64 minutes (an hour and four minutes).
Also, itâ(TM)s a step down in animation and, like Pinocchio, makes up for that in the development of characters and emotional moments. Dumbo is a true classic.
