Review of Dumb and Dumber To (2014) by John F — 20 Feb 2015
I think the original Dumb and Dumber is an underlooked classic, one of the three great comedies the Farrelly Brothers started their careers with: Dumb and Dumber, Kingpin, and There's Something About Mary.
After those three classic comedies, they haven't come close to reproducing their results in either terms of quality or laughs. That's partly why this sequel is so disappointing; the many callbacks and similar gags to the original remind us of how much the brothers Farrelly don't seem to have "it" anymore.
There are some jokes that work in the movie, but for every one that lands, there's at least two that fall completely flat. Perhaps editing out the "bad" jokes and getting the movie down to an hour and a half would have helped.
It also doesn't help that Rachel Melvin gives a terrible performance. Her line readings are mostly horrible, they feel like she's reading off cue cards. Perhaps it is the directors' fault in not reigning in a performance from the actress that feels a little more natural.
