Review of Duets (2000) by Curtis W — 30 Dec 2003
VIDEO.
I didn't have high hopes for this movie to be honest, but i'd caught a bit of Gwyneth Paltrow singing 'Betty Davis Eyes' well and was curious. It turns out to be another Altman-esque ensemble movie, with three disparate duos making their way to a £5000 karaoke showdown at Omaha. Paltrow and Huey Lewis recently reunited as father and daughter are one duo, a dissaffected salesman and an escaped convict the second, and an unfulfilled taxi driver and sleazy chancer (an unrecognisable Mary Bello who played Del Amico in ER) the third. Huey Lewis - who made an appearance in Altman's Short Cuts - is fairly blank as the karaoke hustler with little interest in building bridges with his daughter, and Paltrow seems intimidated by the fact that her (now deceased) dad's on directorial duty. On the whole, a road trip that's worth taking.
