Review of Duelist (2005) by Jeff W — 06 Jan 2009
When Lee Myung-se, spoilt darling of every Western film critic, after a five-year hiatus returned with period drama Hyeongsa, he disappointed the hell out of everyone. And indeed, there is something terribly wrong with this movie, as if Lee's wonderful visual poetry is incongruent with the blandness of the story he's trying to tell.
Maybe the narrative is of minor importance to Lee, who of course is a visual artist first and foremost, but the gravity of these images demands something more substantial in my opinion.
