Review of Dude (2018) by Jonathan H — 27 May 2018
While there are moments of great writing and genuine emotion coming from Hale, the plot is extremely weak and the dialogue feels forced as many times as not. While there are a few good goofs here and there, this is far from a stoner comedy and closer to a lifetime movie with a few drugs and curse words thrown in to feign edginess.
These flaws could have been forgiven if not for the rape scene that seemed to be thrown in as an after thought. Seriously, the main character gets raped and the movie barely acknowledges it other than her getting a little huffy with her friends.
Meanwhile, we spend 30 minutes of screen time making dramatic faces at each other because one of them is going to a different college, but the fact that the main character is raped is summed up literally in 5 seconds by a kick to the groin.
All in all, I suppose it's worth a watch if you are in that kind of mood, For all it's flaws, Hale's performance will carry your attention through the bad writing.
