Review of Duck Soup (1933) by Martyn I — 04 Jan 2010
Duck Soup stars the four Marx brothers Groucho, Zeppo, Harpo and Chico. It is possibly one of the funniest films I have ever seen, and includes the infamous mirror scene.
The Marx brothers style of comedy is utterly brilliant, due to the fact that much of it was improvised, thus giving rise to their pure genius.
Duck Soup tells the loose story of Freedonia, and the rise to power of Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho), who is full of witty remarks and insults such as the brilliant line after Mrs. Teasdale (Margaret Dumont) tells Firefly of her husband's death;.
"Will you marry me? Did he leave you any money? Answer the second question first. ".
This shows perfectly how spontaneous and brilliant Groucho and his brothers were, and although their films are fairly old, they are still just as hilarious as they were back in the 30s.
