A leader takes a country into war because of a personal vendetta. Sound familiar? No? OK. Looking past the legendary status that the Marx brothers now hold, it seems that Groucho is playing craps with the witty lines.
When you bet on everything, you're bound to hit something. Often, you miss. Groucho's lines frequently seem like he's trying way too hard and falls a bit short. But, I won't deny that he throws out some clever insults.
I much prefer the dynamic between Chico and Harpo and I think Harpo is the funniest of the Marx brothers. This film is a good exhibition of their talents.
