Review of Duck Soup (1933) by Prasad P — 30 Jul 2009
The Marx Brothers are anarchy personified. This, considered to one of their finest, has obviously dated (the film was made in 1933) and has to be viewed with some sympathy. But it still packs quite a comedic wallop with the four brothers on top form and the gags sporting the artistic precision of a ballerina.
There is no coherent story - the film is clumsily set up around a series of vaudeville hold over gags - but that is not the point. The joy is to watch the brothers at the top of their game, best of all the cynical, incendiary wisecracks of Groucho.
The Groucho-Harpo mirror gag is a true masterpiece of comedic timing and coordination.
