Review of Duck Soup (1933) by Terry W — 17 Oct 2010
The Marx Brothers certainly mucked around in their films (indeed, mucking about was a specialty) but they seldom managed to pack as much daft action into a mere 66 minutes as they did in Duck Soup. Its running gags - the motorcycle sidecar, the vendetta with the street vendor, Harpo's sociopathic mayhem with his pruning shears - are frenetic, while the set pieces like Firefly's grand entrance (for which he arrives fashionably late) and the famous mirror scene in which two and eventually three identically dressed Marxes mimic each other have gone down in history.
