Review of Duck Soup (1933) by Hiatt N — 02 Sep 2012
One of the greatest movies ever made. It reminds me of Sherlock Jr in that it's highly condensed brilliance, enough jokes to fill a two hour film brought down to seventy minutes. It's a delirious rush, a blast through the zany imaginings of the Marx Brothers. It works on every level: a brilliant slapstick comedy, a jaw-dropping series of one-liners, the epitome of talented verbal sparring, and even a scathing social commentary. The latter is so understated, however, that it never interferes with the laughs, and yet is powerfully reinforced. Just incredible!
On a side note: apparently, the Marx Brothers were delighted when Benito Mussolini banned the film in Italy. And when the Brothers received a complaint from the area of Fredonia NY, saying that the film might bring down impressions of the town, the Brothers replied that they were worried the town might bring down impressions of the film.
