Review of Drunken Master (1978) by Evan C — 08 Jul 2007
Its easy to see why this movie made Jackie Chan into a martial arts legend. He displays his ability not only as a fighter, but also as a comedian and entertainer. He displays multiple styles of Kung Fu and effectively morphs into a master of Drunken Boxing (an amazing style that very few have ever known).
I love his crazy drunken uncle and the training which he forces Jackie to do (the part where he controls his movements with the ropes..WOW). Also, the 8 Drunken Gods and their various forms display the complexity of the style.
The movie may be dated with random dubbing, chessy sound effects, and fairly poor picture quality, but that hardly detracts from the fighting and probably adds to the humor. The plot's straightforward for a martial arts movie and not bad at all.
Watch the master at work in his early days. A must see for fans of martial arts, crazy asian humor, or both!
