Review of Drunken Master (1978) by Jan S — 28 Dec 2007
Considered a classic in the Kung Fu genre, but like Sergio Leones westerns not in its own time. Drunken Master was initially mostly screened at local Hong Kong cinemas and occasionally mentioned in martial art magazines.
It was not recognized until Legend of Drunken Master (Drunken Master II) was launched in 1994. Jackie Chan's Drunken Master is everything a Kung Fu movie should be: poor acting, bad jokes and brilliantly choreographed and inventive martial arts.
The Matrix trilogy had some great fight scenes, but they did it with 21th century technology. Jackie Chan did almost the same choreography thirty years ago, but without technology. (He never has, actually).
