Review of Drunken Angel (1948) by Bernard A — 29 Mar 2010
This is a brilliant film from one of the greatest directors of all time. Kurosawa manages to balance hilarity and deep pathos on a background of poverty and desperation in postwar Japan. Takashi Shimura as the short-tempered doctor is nothing short of sublime while Mifune, in his Kurosawa debut, succeeds in winning over the audience's sympathy as a down-on-his luck hoodlum.
