Review of Drug War (2012) by Aaron M — 05 Nov 2013
Drug War is 90 minutes of lead in for one masterful grand finale where the police seem to have no regard for their safety or the safety of those around them... and I have no problem with any of it!
There is a level of intelligence in this film lacking in a good amount of Hollywood product that when combined with the visual sophistication and craftsmanship of Johnnie To combines to form a true masterpiece of a crime thriller.
The caricature-like characters come off so natural under To's direction where they could have easily turned into the cast of Dick Tracey under a lesser skilled person.
What struck me most about this film is the story. It's just such a smartly written piece of crime drama that could have maybe benefitted from a little more excitement around the middle portion of the film but there is so much good going on here that it's easy to forgive a lot of the shortcomings.
Drug War is highly recommended by yours truly for those in the mood for a crime story that seems a little common on the surface but is highly engaging with a lot of smarts.
