Review of Drowning by Numbers (1988) by Matthew S — 26 May 2015
A most definitely polarizing sort of art film. Greenaway's attention to the most seemingly minor symbols and pseudo "clues" only enhances this family of women who take matters into their own deadly hands when they become dissatisfied with their husbands.
Sacha Vierny's cinematography has never been better. Joan Plowright is not afraid to go where the film leads her and plays this role with a dignified perversity. This experimental dark comedy will either be loved or hated.
I love it. Thus far, this is my favorite Peter Greenaway film. Criterion, where are you?
