Review of Drop Dead Gorgeous (1991) by Cameron P — 18 Jan 2009
Crass, ultimately pointless, sledgehammer attempt at satire botches it from the get-go, continually breaking the mockumentary device, and is structured horribly. The film digs into a local beauty pageant, the contestants of which seem to be meeting with foul play.
Suddenly, plot threads seem to be picked up and ran with, then abandoned (why is there no investigation into all these mishaps? People are acting like this happens all the time). Suddenly, there are resolutions: we have our eventual winner, and the murderer is unmasked.
Movie over, right? WRONG. We're off to the next round, by which point, the audience couldn't care less. What's more, the movie tries to make us care -- only to throw us the most anticlimactic of endings.
For all the savage satire on display, this really is a silly, lunkheaded, misconceived, terrible film, despite the valiant efforts of its talented cast.
