Review of Driving Miss Daisy (2015) by Thorne W — 25 Nov 2009
Freeman's performance was stunning in that he portrayed a character that successfully made me forget that it was Morgan Freeman onscreen, but the film's merits stop there. The story was a bit rushed for my tastes, I was actually shocked to see the characters aging fairly rapidly because I didn't find that the movie indicated the passing of time all that well. By the end of the film it only felt as if the two main characters had known each other for a few weeks, and not the 20 years that had apparently passed. I cannot say much about the chemistry between Tandy and Freeman, because there really is none. Despite the claim that Freeman is Tandy's best friend by the end of the film, they really come across more as somewhat awkward acquaintances, though even that seems to fluctuate depending on the scene.
There was seeming to be elements of a subplot concerning racism and overcoming color-barriers, but it really wasn't developed that much, it just showed up every now and again to show that it was still there, so in that regard the movie failed as well.
Overall, I found the movie to be fairly shallow and pretentious. I have to ask, what's the point?
