Review of Driving Miss Daisy (2015) by John B — 05 Aug 2013
Forget sentimentality of an epic period piece, this movie is all about a small scale character study. When most movies would expand in scope to such changing in times, this movie contracts. We get a small intimate tale of humanity here.
There is a mastery of subtly here, the way the characters age and change. The only way I can explain it is that the actors such suggest everything they mean by indirection. Everything is implied, and we are drawn to the tears by being bound with the actors into the negative space located inside the frame of "plot" and "storyline," where the discerning viewer can pick up the real depth of the story in what never has to be said or done.
Its a movie about humanity coated in that rough schema of pride, pomp, and social status, but by the end when the guards are down, when they are just two old people, I cried. first time in a long time.
I mean they act just like regular people, theres no epiphany in every scene. I takes a long time for the change to happen but thats real life.
