Review of Driving Lessons (2006) by Allison D — 03 Feb 2010
This was a bit of a surprise. It stars Rupert Grint, and I was expecting a silly road comedy. What I got was more akin to a modern Harold & Maude, only instead of a full blown romance, it's much more so a mother/son thing.
Grint is hired to be a driver to a down and out, elderly, former soap star, and it has a terrific dramatic pull. The next morning after having a woman for the night, is excellent as he realizes he just screwed over his employer.
Watching him realize then and yell at the girl in his bed just goes to show how good he can be. As in the Harry Potter series, he's best when almost affably funny, but always on the brink of something really dramatic.
Laura Linney is excellently shrill as his mother. A nice, welcome surprise.
