I'm seventeen years old and I still can't drive. There are various reasons for this, but I think this film captures my biggest one: driving is scary, and overcoming this fear is something that requires self-confidence and courage. In fact, coupled with the awkward age that people are in when they start driving, it's a little interesting that more coming-of-age movies don't use this connection more often.

Rupert Grint (of "Harry Potter" fame) plays Ben Marshall, a seventeen-and-a-half year old without his license. His mother (Laura Linney) is no use, usually using his driving lessons as an excuse to carry out an illicit affair. Eventually, Ben gets a job helping out a former actress, Dame Evie Walton (Julie Walters), who takes him on a series of... adventures.

All the actors here are good, especially Laura Linney. Linney is the preacher's wife, constantly pious and acting holier than everyone around her. This hypocrisy is nicely contrasted with her husband (Nicholas Farrell), who often preaches against the kind of Christianity she practices.

The true joy of the movie comes from Ben's relationship with Evie. Evie is a former actress, and Ben is a poet not entirely confident with his work. This dichotomy helps define their characters, and works extremely well.

The film is both a drama and a comedy, and balances the elements very well. It never feels cartoonish. It's real. I can imagine this happening in real life.

True, the film does drag at times, and its discussions on Christianity do feel a little on the nose (although it is nice to note that the film remains completely respectful throughout). Some plot points feel a little off. I can't explain it. Just some things don't really work.

All in all, however, this is a great movie. And you should see it.
