Review of Drive Thru (2007) by Static M — 23 Feb 2008
Aside from a kind of funny opening sequence, Drive-Thru is mostly grating. We follow a group of immensely unlikeable teenagers around while they get killed off -- you guessed it -- one by one. I guess movie killers really like to savor their murders and don't want to do it all at once. So the characters run around swearing at each other and calling each other Republicans and, of course, being easily picked off one by one. That may be the biggest problem I have with the movie, really, is how much I couldn't stand any of the characters in the movie. Why am I supposed to care whether they live or die?
The movie utilizes most of the tried and true cliches of your standard horror flick. Simplified motive, lots of gotcha! moments, revelatory backstory that helps the main character put together the missing pieces of puzzle, an 'well, I'm glad that's over... or is it??? (OII) ending, and so on ad infinitum.
Not even Horny's weak puns (pulled off so much better in Santa's Slay) can really save the movie. Despite the promise of the premise, it still feels so much like we've been there and done that a hundred times over.
P.S. I've got to admit, though, the idea of the Hella-Burger restaurant kind of made me smile. "I'd like one of your beelze-burgers, please." Come on, that's kind of funny.
