Review of Drive Angry (2011) by Adam M — 04 Aug 2011
Another example of a big budget American film trying desperately to hit the trashy so-bad-it's kinda fun mark but unlike Aja's recent Piranha remake, falling short. Nic Cage sleepwalks the undead man with no name avenger, to the point of remaining fully clothed like a moulded action figure during the films pulpiest set-piece involving a naked waitress, a big cigar and lots of guns.
The screen energy mostly comes from spunky hot-panted Amber Heard, who is quickly becoming the premier horror-trash heroine. Burke really disappoints as the satanic cult leader, when what this film really needs is a proper scenery chewing baddie, having said that Fichtner nearly steals the show as the smooth Satanic bureacrat "Accountant".
Furthermore for a film with some great American muscle cars the action sequences are tame, and the effects, robbed of 3D whizz-bang, almost as embarrasing on the small screen as those in Jaws 3.
