Review of Drive Angry (2011) by Ryan K — 03 Jul 2012

Wow. How can you manage to fuck up a grind-house like movie? Drive Angry is the perfect example of how not to make a grind-house movie. This made me think "let's leave the grind-house movies to Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino".

This movie is a derailment to cinema. Is it dumb? Yes. Is the acting shit? Yes. Is it fun? Yes. But with all of this it doesn't mix well. It doesn't click like Planet Terror did or Death Proof.

This is just nonsensical and paper thin characters that we just don't give a fuck. People are getting killed left and right and two characters are running around killing large quantities of enemies.

The movies intro was fun and awesome but then after the title comes up and we see the characters talking and hearing their lines it looses all interest or caring. The script is absolutely awful. It is so cheesy, campy, and so fucking cliche I was ready to vomit.

It tries to hard to be a fun summer blockbuster but it never throws big thrills. Some scenes in this copy other fun summer blockbusters. For example there is a scene where Nick Cage is having sex with this one chick and enemies are running in the room and as he's still kind of screwing her he's killing the bad guys.

You've seen that from a movie before? Oh yeah it was Shoot 'em Up! It's the exact same scene from that movie and honestly it's boring. Now understandingly some of the actors are hamming it up because they know it's so shitty so they act so damn terribly but have fun with their characters which I thought was ok.

I actually like it when actors do that because it makes the movie somewhat fun and makes their character stand out among the rest. William Fichtner is defiantly the one I'm talking about. He was so awesome and so whatever that he just went and had a blast playing his character.

So in the end Drive Angry isn't so great. It has fun moments but other than that it's a joke. I swear the movie is just so average and there is nothing to really care for. The acting sucks when characters interact it sucks, the plot sucks everything sucks.

I think it has some cool parts but this just doesn't work like other fun over the top action movies have. Not a good movie.
