Review of Drive (2011) by Corey C — 08 Jan 2014
This film is a perfect example of blending art house cinema with main stream action. This mystic world which is LA is forgotten as a whole and the magnifying glass is placed on the people which operate within, showing us that it's not all cameras and magic all of the time as portrayed in typical Hollywood film.
The concept of artificiality is also a major topic within this film, most specifically within the driver. In the beginning we see the driver as a kind of cool nameless driver who has all of the right moves and is someone cool, calm, and collected.
This image carries on for the movie with Irene and her son, as Real Hero by college serenades us to the warm imagery of Driver becoming a father figure for Irene and her son. This shifts dramatically as his dark past comes out when Standard returns, displaying his sociopathic background in small glimpses and the notion that we can make pretend but our past is always present in us.
A deep look into the emotional scale and how we fight to keep ourselves sane in a world of wrong direction.
