Review of Drive (2011) by Jonathan W — 12 Mar 2015
Drive is the ultimate example of style over substance--which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The style is beautiful; it just doesn't provide much motivation to watch the film more than once. It seems like half the movie is composed of long shots of Ryan Gosling staring into space while indie music plays in the background.
The character he plays is a silent but deadly driver/hitman, which is a welcome improvement over the pretty boy roles that made him famous. The action scenes are short but sweet, incorporating a level of ultra-violence that really punches you in the gut.
The greatest weak point here is the story, or lack of one. There's something about a mix-up involving a case full of money, but it's not enough to carry the film. All in all, it's worth a watch, if only for the aesthetics.
