Review of Drillbit Taylor (2008) by Anna A — 30 May 2009
First of all, you have to be a fan of rollicking comedies and pop culture references. If you tend to like Owen Wilson movies, you will find that this is quite possibly the funniest comedy he has ever made.
You will also find that he is not the only actor in the film that generates a ton of laughs. The basic premise: when 3 kids (the fat one, the skinny one, and the short one) get bullied during their freshman year of high school by a truly horrible, dangerous student who knows how to cover his tracks, they hire a bodyguard to protect them.
Drillbit, play by Wilson, is your basic bum trying to get by on life without actually doing anything for anyone else but conning his way into it. His goal: to con three kids out of their money and their possessions.
Obviously, once he sees the extent of the situation, he becomes actively involved and ends up liking the kids and wanting to help them--even if it means pretending to be a substitute teacher in order to trap the bullies into leaving the three kids alone.
My husband and I laughed longer and harder as one hilarious line and gag followed another hilarious line and gag. Warning: This movie is PG-13. Just because there are kids in the movie doesn't mean that the language is really appropriate for kids or even that some of the scenarios are appropriate.
