Review of Drillbit Taylor (2008) by Trystan C — 23 Jul 2012
I was really psyched for this movie like a year ago when I first saw the trailer. It looked like "Superbad" for kids entering high school instead of leaving it, and with Seth Rogen one of the credited writers and 80's legend John Hughes helping on the story, this had to be more Apatow gold, right?
Nope.
This is a movie simultaneously trying to be as earnest as "Superbad" and as ridiculous as a Happy Madison release. There's a reason those comedy styles don't work together. For every realistic touching moment this movie had, and for every hilarious and original line of dialogue said, there's an equally cliche moment.
Or a senior high school bully hurling a samurai sword at a police officer.
