Review of Dredd (2012) by Landis Anna F — 12 Jun 2014
Akin to a Roger Corman film -- just with more production value and special effects -- but retaining the fun sensibilities and the vivid violence that is both absurd and outlandish, but rooted in real context.
Travis paints the canvas with wild colors and slow-motion that not only makes the pulp pop, but appreciate the attention to detail and the beautiful potency of the violence. But not only do we get a fun, thrilling science fiction fantasy, we get some self-aware, deadpan humor all rooted from Karl Urban's chin and dour performance.
By being uncharismatic or unrelenting, having a character of his stature and attitude is fresh and invigorating. Lest we forget Lena Headey as the ferocious, over-the-top villain that is having so much fun chewing on scenery as if a zombie were munching down flesh.
