Review of Dreamscape (1984) by Eric S — 25 Jul 2010
I saw this about 15 years ago and the end sequence on the train had stayed with me since then. It has an atmosphere that is hard to describe - it retains a certain amount of spookiness despite being littered with poor dialogue, bad stop motion animation, and a clunky low budget look and feel - and the bad guy from the Warriors who doesn't say 'Warriors, come out to plaaa-aaay', which was a little disappointing.
On the plus side, I like the dreams - and that they have all this german expressionism going on in them, like the afterlife in Beetlejuice - and that you can be killed by fear in your dreams which leads to a 'Fantastic Frozen Face of Fear' (as I like to call it) as someone is discovered dead in their bed.
It was Kermode wittering on about Inception that got me to look this one up again. I think he was far too generous to 'inception', but he's right to have a wee special place in his heart for Dreamscape.
