Review of Dreams (1990) by Ayat M — 08 Feb 2016
Oddly enough and contrary to most critic's views, this is my favourite Akira Kurosawa film. With the assistance of some of his biggest fans, including George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, and Steven Spielberg, Kurosawa found funding for his deeply personal movie in Hollywood. Even Martin Scorcese directs one of the segments. The film is based entirely on a number of Kurosawa's dreams, presented in vignettes of approximately 15 minutes each.
The film is a fantastic display of imagery, creativity, and beauty. The first dream, "Sunshine Through The Rain" is my favourite. This is a high art film and not for all audiences. There is no underlying plot or story, as these are completely independent short films tied together. Some are better than others. Some are downright weak (Mount Fuji In Red) to great (Village Of The Watermills). If you are a fan of Kurosawa or a cinema student, you will appreciate this picture, one of his last.
