Review of Dreamgirls (2006) by Thomas S — 10 Jul 2010
Sporadically entertaining musical that keeps threatening to take off but never really does; the horrible pacing and overlength finally kills it. Jennifer Hudson makes for a decent, if not exactly Oscar-worthy, debut, and the other performances are up to scratch, but the anodyne music numbers do not a good musical make.
The plot, which liberally borrows from Diana Ross/Supremes story, too often grates (particular when trying to force it into real life history), and some of the scenes are drawn out for so long they simply annoy.
One of the few standout moments comes when Beyonce Knowles finally gets a chance to shine when performing "Listen", but at well over two thirds of the way into the film, at this point I'd already given it up.
I guess Dreamgirls just isn't for me.
