Set in the turbulent early 1960s to mid-70s, "Dreamgirls" follows the rise of a trio of women--Effie, Deena and Lorrell--who have formed a promising girl group called The Dreamettes. At a talent competition, they are discovered by an ambitious manager named Curtis Taylor Jr., who offers them the opportunity of a lifetime: to become the back-up singers for headliner James "Thunder" Early. Curtis gradually takes control of the girls' look and sound, eventually giving them their own shot in the spotlight as The Dreams. That spotlight, however, begins to narrow in on Deena, finally pushing the less attractive Effie out altogether. Although the Dreams become a crossover phenomenon, they soon realize that the cost of fame and fortune may be higher than they ever imagined.

Saw this movie again and I really enjoyed watching this move. I noticed some great amount of criticism, negativity and very underrated response from Flixster community on this movie, Why? I loved this movie, Critics liked it too but wasn't much appreciated by it. well I don't know why, I didn't saw anything bad with this movie, it was an stunning movie.

It was not just the music, visual dazzle but the emotional touch of this movie which was great for me. not over the top melodramatic but in a very simplistic way, loved it. it featured some good performances too. a big shocker from two people, first of all Eddie Murphy? what? I had absolutely no idea he could act that good, he was serious. wow good. and second was Jennifer Hudson, not just she has a God gifted voice and talent but she was the best performer of this movie. other actors like Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Danny Glover, Anika, Keith, Sharon and many other supporting cast were good enough. so performances wise a good movie.

Screenplay could have been slightly better I must say but still it was good. direction was perfect. amazing costumes and art direction, good cinematography. stunning visual treat it was. it was also a stunning almost sweet hearing treat as it had excellent music, I loved all the song numbers and choreography of it. A lovely musical treat for those who love the jazz, blues and the 60's Motown music scene, movie was uplifting. you will become a fan of this movie once you see it. loved ti. must watch musical.
