'Dreamgirls' is a very good musical, mostly down to its astounding cast and their performances, because of its feel good vibe, and talented directing. It may fail in some ways in its disjointed narrative, and the balance of music and drama, but you simply cant hate it.
Mainly because of Jennifer Hudson and Eddie Murphy, Hudson gives arguably one of the best performances of all time, her will power but also innocence and fear are amazingly portrayed. Her performance of 'I'm Telling You' is simply spellbinding and will stand out as one of the greatest scenes of that decade.
Murphy also performs his career greatest and the 'Jimmy's Rap' performance is also a career best. You can't also forget Beyoncà (C), Jamie Foxx and Anika Noni Rose who fit in perfectly well with the rest of their cast, and none of them being forgettable, especially Beyoncà (C) who just misses out on being the best performer in the film, but thats only because of Hudson and Murphy's great performances.
Overall, Dreamgirls wouldn't be as good a film if it wasn't for its cast, one of the greatest in a long while.
