Review of Dreamgirls (2006) by Amanda Y — 13 Mar 2010
I'm debating if I want to give it a half star more because of the music. The music is good. There's no doubt about that. Some of the lip-synching in the earlier scenes were bad noticeably. If you're going to do a musical, then get the lip-synching right.
But it was good in a lot of the other scenes. I enjoy Jennifer Hudson's performance. Sometimes she had that wide eyed emotional look but not bad. The story was good but I didn't like how they laid out some of the scenes.
Not fabulous to me. Jamie Foxx's performance didn't mean much to me. Eddie Murphy on the other hand did well. I was glad that he handled the role nicely. Maybe not Oscar worthy but good. Beyonce was decent.
I forgot that she doesn't have black hair in real life but it fit her. There were some scenes where it looked like they had to give her eyedrops to cry. But when she leaves Curtis, that was good except for the "goodbye" part.
That was bad. Overall, a good movie and it doesn't bore you. The music, the costumes, the dancing and the songs integrated into conversations - good musical. You want to know how it happened next.
It is cliche of show business but it ended on a positive note.
