Review of Dreamgirls (2006) by Eytan D — 21 Jan 2013
Bill Condon's adaptation of "Dreamgirls" is triumphant! It's bright, colorful, nostalgic, and emotionally moving, and Condon does it all while setting it to a great story of the cutthroat music business in the 1960's.
You can't ask for a better cast. The entire ensemble is spirited and fun to watch. Anika Noni Rose's spunky and chuckle-inducing Lorell is a joy. Jamie Foxx is spot-on as the ruthless Curtis. Eddie Murphy's performance as Jimmy Early is his best work period.
Beyonce's acting chops aren't as up to par as everyone else, but her voice still packs a whallop. But the real star of the movie is, was, and ever shall be ex-"American Idol" contestant Jennifer Hudson as the angry and powerful Effie White.
This is the sweetest revenge Hudson could ever have gotten after Simon Cowell gave it to her harsh on "Idol." Her performance here is absolutely perfect. Hudson is funny, sweet, and when she's angry, she becomes a screen storm.
When comparing her signature number "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" to the great Jennifer Holliday, Hudson still leaves you speechless. You can't go wrong with "Dreamgirls!".
