Review of Dreamgirls (2006) by Cody F — 24 May 2009
If Michael Bay did a musical then this would be it.The story is predictable, but all over the place and for the love of god they wouldn't stop singing. I watched it because the Motown story is interesting and it got nominated for a slew of awards and won a few.
Dreamgirls proves how Hollywood will support any musical that falls into their lap, and throw any awards they can pick up at it.This genre died in the 60's for a reason,Hollywood makes 1 every few years and still fail.
This film made Chicago look like a masterpiece and Moulin Rouge look like Citizen Kane. The story jumps all over the place with zero character development, but at the same time you see whats around every corner.
The music is forgettable and hardly fits into the Music genre they are supposed to be in. This movie was made to show off that everyone in it could carry a tune, and seriously there is only at times 2 minutes between each song.
What makes a musical horrible in my book is 1)Bad story 2)Bad Music 3) No Chemistry between the actors and 4)Break out into song every 2 minutes. This film had all four. I'd rather watch The Apple again than this turd!
