Review of Dreamcatcher (2003) by Andy W — 30 Jul 2010
A random, bizarre, and not to mention incredibly, INCREDIBLY silly Stephen King adaptation (which seems to be an incredibly silly book in the first place), this film actually scores points for being so so so so hilariously stupid and weird.
Its nicely shot, got a great cast (who all seem a bit confused, as if they signed up for the Shawshank Redemption but got Maximum Overdrive instead: Morgan Freeman I'm looking at you), but its the director who struggles to find the tone - which is fair play, because when the horror comes from the toilet, you're hardly in "The Shining" territory.
Its a mish-mash of IT and Stand By Me, but was never destined for greatness due to the depths of how poorly conceived the story is. In the extras, King discusses, quite seriously, how the bathroom has never been fully explored when it comes to horror.
There' a reason for that, Stephen - its not scary, its just daft.
