Review of Dream Home (2010) by Joe A — 07 Sep 2011
Hong Kong film is an odd mix of social commentary, sentimental melodrama and gruesome slasher flick and director Ho-Cheung Pang actually makes it work for the most part. Dream Home tells of a young woman who can't afford her dream apartment so she decides that if she kills enough people in the building, the property value will drop and so will the apartment prices.
Despite the absurd plot, which is supposedly based on a true story, Pang brings a lot of it together. His directing is stylish and he uses flashbacks to tell his killer's story and actually makes her a bit sympathetic despite her vicious and brutal extermination of the residents of her desired housing complex.
The gore is well done and the killings are brutal, bloody and effective just as the more melodramatic parts make you feel bad for the unbalanced Cheng. A very odd horror flick to say the least but, the Hong Kong Cinema is reknown for unusual genre mixes and have a good track record for making them work.
If nothing else, Dream Home is a refreshingly different addition to the slasher genre.
