Review of Drawing Flies (1996) by Tim S — 12 Oct 2013
Drawing Flies is the product of filmmakers Malcolm Ingram and Matt Gissing, with the backing of the View Askew company. Malcolm Ingram would go on to work with Kevin Smith on the Clerks animated TV series, but way before then, they shot this grainy, raw, Clerks-ish movie about a group of misfits who are driven out into the wilderness by a guy who believes that he can track down Bigfoot.
The movie does feature some of the View Askew all-stars from the Mallrats/Chasing Amy era, including Jason Lee, Carmen Lee, Jason Mewes, Renee Humphrey and even Kevin Smith himself in a cameo as Silent Bob.
The movie, for all intents and purposes, is not a very good one. It's way overwritten as far as quirky dialogue goes and characters that are just lifeless and uninteresting. It looks pretty good, most of the time, but overall, just misses whatever mark that it was trying to hit.
It's watchable, but you'll probably forget just about everything about it after seeing it and won't ever feel the need to revisit it. And that's all.
