Review of DragonHeart (1996) by Sums I — 17 Aug 2011
Let's shee... a movie with Sean Connery as a dragon. Shounds special. Well, not so much. It ends up being a big mixed bag of funny, serious, CGI, real-life, believable and not, and... Sean Connery as a dragon?
In thinking about this film, I still can't decide if it wants to be serious or a comedy. Not that a serious movie can't have comedy, but the tone doesn't change from slapstick to sadness like this one does. The story is also very uneven. One moment you have a self-serving Dragon Slayer, the next you have a soft-hearted hero... with not enough time in between to figure out what's going on.
I'm sure the CGI was great for its day, so I'm not going to comment about it now. I'd say it's believable enough, other than a huge dragon speaking in a perfect Sean Connery impersonation. haha. Okay, okay... love Sean, he really wasn't the problem at all.
An interesting film for what it tried to do with mythology... a little bit of modern-day PETA elements too, in the protection of intelligent animals! And if you really can't decide if this review is serious or whacky, I guess you'll probably enjoy Dragonheart.
