Review of DragonHeart (1996) by Kelsey L — 16 Nov 2010
At the time this came out, it was pretty groundbreaking with how realistic the dragon was. I loved this movie I think because 1) I love Sean Connery, and 2) I love anything having to do with the Middle Ages.
The movie wasn't particularly well acted (well, David Thewlis as "Einon" was great, as was Pete Postlethwaite as Brother Gilbert), but I think it just was touching for those of us who love the fantasy of the time when tons of idealistic knights roamed Europe fighting "dragons" and saving maidens.
This, however, is a "snapshot" of that period when knights were a dying breed, just as the "dragons." Honor, loyalty, brotherhood, chivalry were becoming a thing of the past, and both the dragon and Bowen are the last of their kind.
I cried at the end -- cheesy though it is -- for what it represented, more than what it actually showed. For that, the movie remains dear to my heart.
