Review of DragonHeart (1996) by Erika N — 11 Aug 2010
There are astonishment's to behold in "Dragonheart", one of major ones being the music, which is the key to this movie's success. The movie's music alone stands as a unique fusion of epic fantasy and heart-felt comedy that fully captures an energy and power that is filled with emotion - soaring melodies that are balanced in both magic and adventure. The score is utterly outstanding, one that will, I hope, be memorable for a long time to come.
The movie follows the two main heros Bowen, the last real dragon slayer, and Draco, the last dragon, as they set off on their quest to defeat the evil King Einon who rules the land. All of the actors do an excellent job in portraying their roles perfectly; David Thewlis makes a marvelous malicious villain, Dina Meyer makes a splendid heroine, and although he isn't precisly hero material, Dennis Quaid can be a great knight when given the chance.
"Dragonheart" is a magnificent entertainment for all ages. The kids will love it for the action and the special effects, and the older audience will love the neat characters, entertaining story, and relish the very special feel the film holds... reminding us what it feels like to be a kid again, go on an adventure, and have fun.
"Dragonheart" has plenty to offer to anyone willing to watch. It's like the flowing of all wonderful magical opportunities and twists and turns. And in this movie, computers are used not only to create special effects, but also to stun and amaze us in showing us epic fantasy magic and style, to find a look for the film that fits its story. The dragon in this film in terms of effects is, to put it short and simply, visually stunning. However, the dragon along with the other characters are not simply cardboard cut-out heroes or villains seen in a bland outline, but quirky individuals with unique and complex personalities, holding onto their own ambitions and dreams and desires, and some even become memorable long after you've seen the film.
"Dragonheart" is a surprisingly involving and rather beautiful movie - one that will appeal openly to any age of audience, and it also crosses over to the people who have no plans to see "Dragonheart" but will change their minds the more they hear. I think the film even holds a message, that you should always do what you need to in order to save the people you care about, even if it means having to make a sacrifice of our own. It also teaches us other important lessens of friendship, honor, trust, and truth. "Dragonheart" is one of my favorite films, and will always be seen as a classic in my eyes. This is a film that holds a lot of magic and has a lot of heart. It is a film that really will make you believe, if you give it the chance. - Erika N.
