If you have even the slightest bit of familiarity with the source material, you'll understand why the fans will act like you threw racist slurs at them whenever you bring up the movie. If this movie were a stand-alone film, it would be okay at best.
Yet the Dragonball name was added in, almost as if it's only there to get people to see the movie. The only thing it has in common with the anime and manga is the names. Even by its own merits, there's a lot of bad stuff.
The acting is terrible, the action is not very good, the special effects are laughably bad, there's a small romantic subplot between Goku and Chi Chi which is practically pointless and the dialogue is so, so cringy.
It's almost as if the filmmakers saw a few production notes for Speed Racer and thought that that was all it took to make a beloved Japanese creation into a big-budget Hollywood flick. The only things I liked were two scenes and the makeup for Piccolo's actor.
Why, Alec Gillis and Tom Woddruff Jr.? Why were you dragged into this? You make really cool costumes, makeup and animatronics and you were involved with THIS mess? How desperate were you to pay your rent? Dragonball Evolution is crap, even moreso if you're a fan of the acclaimed source material.
